Few people will forget where they were or what they were doing on the morning of September 11, 2001 when the news broke of the attacks on New York’s twin World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon in Washington. This tragic and horrific day is etched in the memories of millions of people all over the world.
As with the attack of Pearl Harbor, which resulted in the United States joining World War II, the attacks on 9/11 began the new war against terrorism, touching and altering the lives of every American citizen forever. On the 12th anniversary of 9/11, it is time to give a few moments of reflection to this event and to pray for its victims, their friends and families.
On 11th September 2001, 19 Islamic al-Qaeda militants hijacked four planes. One plane hit each of the south and north towers of New York’s World Trade Center, with both towers ultimately being brought down by the planes and the engulfing firestorm. Various other buildings were also damaged or destroyed in the attacks, most notably the Marriott hotel. The third plane struck the Pentagon in Washington DC, with the fourth crashing in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania after passengers heroically attempted to recapture it from the hijackers.
The total number of people killed on 9/11 was 2,977. 2,606 were killed in the towers, 125 in the Pentagon, 40 on the crashed plane, and 19 terrorists.
