Advice for putting items in storage

Moving is a difficult experience at the best of times, especially if you have more stuff than you know you have space for in your new home.  The answer to this is, of course, to place any excess goods into storage, and there are a few pieces of advice that could be of great assistance to anyone who finds him/herself in this position.

One of the best pieces of advice is to make sure that you have sorted out your belongings prior to the move taking place.  Try to get rid of as much as you can before the relocation, as this results in you having far less items to have to pack, less to move, less to put into storage if needs be, and also that you do not have to start this process after you have moved into your new home, where the chances are that you will already have more than enough to do to keep you occupied for quite some time.

You can store lounge suites by standing them on their end, as this means that you will be using less floor space in your rented storage facility.  It is also recommended that you cover lounge suites with a plastic protector, especially if you think that that furniture is likely to be staying in storage for a good period of time.  You cannot do this with leather lounge suites, however, as it will cause the leather to sweat and then crack.  Leather lounge suites should be covered with cotton sheets in order to guard them against dust settlement and placed flat on the floor.  Nor can leather lounge suites have anything stacked on top of them – this will result in them being caused imprint damage, particularly if they have items stacked on top of them for a fair period of time.

In order to protect bedding and furniture that are being placed into storage, it is a good idea to use mattress covers.  These should be put on the items after they have been placed in the storage facility, as this reduces the risk of them being ripped during the course of transportation.

One good tip for people placing items into storage is to use a numbering system when packing and to have an inventory of the items in each cartons.  This makes it considerably easier to find something if you need to gain access to it while it is in the storage facility.  It is better to try to pack manchester and clothing items in flexible containers such as plastic zip top bags, as this means that they can be pushed between items of furniture to fill any gaps in a packed storage facility.

To keep pillows and bean bags clean while in storage and while being transported, they should be packed in plastic bags.
