All About Moving Boxes

How much do you really know about moving boxes?  If you’re like the average person, you probably think that they’re all the same, but you’d be wrong!

Basically, typical moving boxes are very similar to shipping boxes as far as the weight and quality go.  However, there are some specialty boxes that are thicker and more durable for heavier packing and special items.  So, the main question about moving boxes most people have is – can I just get slightly used boxes from some local stores or do I really need to buy a bunch of moving boxes?

It comes down to need and cost.  You might want to get free boxes for your less valuable items and spend the money on specialty boxes for things that might easily be damaged in the move.  So, whether you buy the boxes or scout them from the supermarket, here’s what you need to know:

  • No single box, other than wardrobe and electronics boxes, should weigh more than 50 pounds.
  • 1.5 cubic foot moving boxes are ideal for books, kitchen stuff, fragile items, small appliances, lamps, and shades.
  • 3.0 cubic foot moving boxes are ideal for pots and pans, electronics, clothing, and linens.
  • 4.5 cubic foot moving boxes are great for larger lamps, larger kitchen appliances, and bedding.
  • 6.0 cubic foot moving boxes are great for pillows, toys, comforters, and couch cushions.
  • A 6.1 cubic foot moving box is rectangular and may be great for odd-shaped items.
  • Wardrobe boxes come with hanging rods to easily transport clothing that can’t be moved flat.
  • Invest in picture and mirror boxes for any art work that you don’t want damaged.
