Moving is a stressful time and as such, there are some pretty basic things that you might actually forget before you relocate. To help you avoid these common mistakes, we’ve put together a quick list of things you’re likely to forget if you’re not thinking about them.
- Opening New Bank Accounts – Don’t forget to transfer funds and move anything out of your safe deposit box before you move. Many banks are regional, so if you are moving within the same state, you might not have to do this. It’s a good idea to open your new accounts before you close the old ones.
- Change Your Address – A lot of people forget to change their address before they move. Visit the local post office to pick up a change of address card and be sure to update all your accounts.
- Find New Doctors – Choosing healthcare professionals in your new city is one of the most important things you can do. It’s a good idea to interview potential doctors over the phone and then set up an initial visit. Now is a good time to transfer prescriptions and medical records as well.
- Transfer Records – If you’ve got insurance, transfer your policies now, before you move. It is also a good time to transfer memberships and school records.
Of course, these aren’t all the things you could possibly forget before you move, but it’s a good start. About a month before you move, start using up the food in your freezer, return borrowed items, and check that the dry cleaners don’t still have any of your clothes before you actually leave town.
