Benedict Cumberbatch says that he is considering leaving the UK for the US. The 36-year-old actor who rose to fame as the very modern incarnation of Sherlock Holmes in the popular BBC crime drama Sherlock received his education from the top UK private school of Harrow and says he is thinking of a move as he is tired of being attacked because of his privileged background.
Cumberbatch, who also starred in the recent adaptation of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and whose parents were also actors, says that he is considering a relocation to the US because of “all the posh bashing that goes on” in the UK. “I wasn’t born into land or titles, or new money, or an oil rig,” he noted to British TV listings magazine Radio Times, yet he has been “castigated as a moaning, rich, public school bastard, complaining about only getting posh roles. It’s just so predictable … so domestic, and so dumb … It makes me think I want to go to America.”
The actor, who is set for a new role as an Edwardian aristocrat in new BBC drama Parade’s End, admits he enjoyed becoming a pin-up off the back of his Sherlock role. “It puts a bit of a spring in your step,” he confesses, adding that he finds it all very amusing. “I’ve punched well above my weight this year,” he concedes, acknowledging that that he wields his newfound fame with a big smile.
