Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens may not have much of a future in the ITV1 smash hit period drama. The actor has admitted that he is planning to move to the US following the show’s rapturous reception across the pond. Stevens plays Matthew Crawley in the drama and will be leaving the UK to star in the Tony award winning play The Heiress on Broadway for the next six months at least, alongside Hollywood actress Jessica Chastain.
Stevens has now admitted that the relocation could end up being permanent, meaning that he would not be able to return to the hit show for another series. Wife Susie Hariet and their two children are accompanying him to the States, and the actor says that he would like to try to carve out a career overseas.
“I am off to New York in about a month’s time and it is going to be one big adventure,” Stevens comments. “I will be taking the whole family out and we will be there for around six months. I don’t know if I will be coming back to Downton as I don’t know if they are doing another series yet.”
The series won four awards at the Emmy Awards in the US last year, including best directing, best mini-series, best writing and best supporting actress for Dame Maggie Smith. Stevens says he was offered the role in the play off the back of the series’ stunning success at the awards.
