Choosing a local moving company can seem overwhelming, but knowing what to ask can help you narrow down your list of potential candidates.
1. How long has the company been in business? Longevity is usually a good indicator that you’re dealing with quality movers.
2. Will they provide references? They should, but if not you can check with the Better Business Bureau or online reviews.
3. Are they licensed and insured? Never hire a mover that’s not.
4. What kind of estimate will they give you? A good mover will usually provide either a binding estimate (you’ll pay exactly what you’re quoted) or a binding-not-to-exceed estimate (your final cost won’t be more than your estimate and could be less).
5. How do they determine relocation charges? Depending on if your move is local, long-distance or across state lines will determine if you’re charged by the total weight of the shipment or by an hourly rate.
6. How do they protect their workers? You don’t want to be held responsible if a mover is injured while handling your stuff.
7. How do they protect your stuff? Be sure you understand the moving company’s packing, loading, and shipping equipment and procedures.
8. How do they protect your home? Find out what measures they have in place to ensure your old and new homes won’t get trashed.
9. What is their claims process if your belongings are lost or damaged during the move?
10. What is their usual timeframe? If you know how long it will take to pick up and drop off your stuff, it’ll be easier to plan your moving day.
