If you have ever moved you know that even during the best circumstances, relocation can be hard. If you throw a major life change into the mix, such as a divorce, economic crisis, or a death, the stress could come close to pushing you over the edge.
Often, people have to move during these situations and may not necessarily want to. Here are some things to consider that might help you get through such a difficult move.
Take What You Need
One of the most common pieces of advice when moving is to get rid of things you haven’t used in more than a year. But if you are moving through an emotional trauma, don’t be so willing to throw things away. Take what you need to make it through the day. If you can’t decide whether you want to take something or get rid of it, it’s best to keep it and decide later.
Don’t Make Rash Decisions
It is always good to listen to your feelings, but don’t get rid of the new kitchen appliances just because they belonged to your ex as well. Don’t throw things away just because of the memories, especially if you are on a budget. Step back and think – do you need this item? If you do, don’t be so rash. Try to avoid making decisions out of spite as you will probably be spiting yourself more!
Get Help
It’s easier said than done but some it’s best to swallow your pride and ask for help with the move. Don’t be afraid to ask for help packing and sorting or get a babysitter. And if you are having a hard time making decisions about the relocation, talk to someone – a friend, counselor, or relative.
