How to move a wine collection

A wine collection can be a sizable investment, so if you are moving then every precaution possible needs to be taken in order to make sure that the collection reaches its intended destination intact.

The first thing to do if you intend to move with a wine collection is to have the collection given a professional appraisal by someone with the appropriate qualifications.  The fees for such appraisal can be quite different depending on whereabouts you live; the fees are often either a flat fee or charged by the hour.  The best method of finding a wine appraiser is to go to a local merchant, who will keep abreast of the current values of particular vintages of wine.  It is also a good idea to take photographs of your wine collection in order to document its exact contents.

You should let your moving company know well in advance that they will be handling wine, or indeed any other high value items, during the relocation.  It may be necessary for special arrangements to be made to ensure that your collection can be safely transported and you will need to fill out a high-value inventory form in order to be assured that your wine collection will not be limited to minimal liability.

There may be legal considerations to take into account when moving a wine collection.  You should check with your destination state’s alcohol beverage control authorities prior to moving, as there are some states in the US that have restrictions on the alcohol amounts allowed for personal use.
