National Senior Citizens Day

National Senior Citizens Day

National Senior Citizens Day was designed to honor the elderly population of the United States and takes place on September 21st every year.  September 21st is a day for people to recognize and express appreciation for the contribution and value of elderly people to family and society in general.

President Ronald Reagan issued Proclamation 5847 on August 19th 1998, which resulted in the creation of National Senior Citizens Day.  “For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute,” Reagan said in his Presidential Proclamation.  “We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older.”

People are encouraged to honor National Senior Citizens Day by taking part in such activities as spending time with senior citizens, expressing appreciation for senior citizens, and doing some volunteer work in support of the elderly.  If you happen to be a senior citizen yourself then the best way to enjoy the day is just to do whatever you desire.  There should be plenty of offers around on the day, so be sure to take advantage of specials and discounts aimed at senior citizens.

There are lots of other Senior Citizens Days all over the world on various different dates.  Many organizations, local communities and countries have declared and held Senior Citizen Days.
