National Watermelon Day takes place each year on 3rd August, and why shouldn’t this large fruit have its own special day? National Watermelon Day is a good time to pause and take a moment to celebrate the watermelon, one of the most loved fruits of the summer season.
Watermelons are sweet and tasty, and standard fare at a lot of picnics. Thirst-quenching and mouthwatering, they are found at parties and picnics on hot summer days, and a lot more besides. Watermelons generally weigh between 20 to 30 pounds, but have been known to grow as big as 200 pounds! It is a fact that watermelons are 90% water – hence the name, no doubt – but they certainly taste very nice anyway. Besides, no decent picnic could possibly be complete without a good old seed spitting contest, could it?
While National Watermelon Day is not an official national day – such a thing would require an act of Congress – and the origin of the day appears to be shrouded in a good deal of mystery, it is a good bet that whoever was behind it was either part of some kind of agricultural organization or, at the very least, someone who really, really liked watermelons.
The consumption of watermelons should not be limited to just this one special day of the year, however. Watermelons are carried by stores in the United States all year round and are an enjoyable treat regardless of the date.
