When it comes to moving your antique furniture and artwork, a lot of care is required and there is always plenty to think about. Do you want to do it yourself or hire professional movers? Doing it on your own can save you money but hiring professionals can ensure that these irreplaceable items are transported safely. However, if you do decide to do it yourself, here are some tips to keep in mind.
- Get everything appraised before you move. Before you do anything, make an inventory of all your valuables and get everything appraised.
- Get the right packing supplies. Now is not the time to skimp on professional moving supplies. So, get some sturdy boxes, packing tape, packing peanuts, bubble wrap, padding, and water-resistant markers. If there are specialty boxes available, for what you’re moving, get those as well.
- Wrap everything up, including the paintings. Use unprinted paper (packing paper) and wrap all of your items up. Follow that with a layer of bubble wrap. Then place in packing blankets or boxes. Never let bubble wrap touch paint directly. If you’re preparing a mirror, place an “X” of tape across the glass to prevent shattering if the glass breaks.
- Get the big stuff ready. Remove anything from the furniture that can come off safely – loose knobs, shelves, handles, and so on. Wrap each piece in protective moving blankets and keep everything tight.
- Yes, mirrors and framed art go in boxes. Everything should be individually wrapped and then placed into a flat, fitted picture box.
Of course, if you hire a moving company, all of this will be done for you. But remember to clearly mark each box with the contents and “fragile” before loading everything carefully into the moving truck or portable storage unit.
