Pizza on Dubuque is set to make a move to a new location, but the owner of the restaurant says that there will be no change to its primary purpose. “We fill the niche for the late night pizza,” says owner Al Risk. “We help the late night kids passing through downtown before they head back home.”
The 5 S Dubuque Street restaurant closed its doors at the weekend and has begun the process of making a move to its new location at 213 Iowa Avenue, with the relocation expected to take several weeks to complete. The new location for the restaurant, which will be renamed Pizza Pod, is expected to open for business sometime next month.
62-year-old Risk says that he has enjoyed operating Pizza on Dubuque for the last 13 years but that a reduction in late night traffic on S Dubuque Street, which he says is due to the passing by the city of a 21-ordinance back in November 2010 and the impact of the recession, made him decide to downsize, with the current two-story restaurant coming at a steep rental cost.
Risk admits that he did think about selling up entirely and simply retiring, but he loves the business too much and the relocation to the place on Iowa Avenue, formerly held by Thai Spice, is perfect for him. “It was very auspicious,” he admits. “It’s going to be a dandy spot.”
