One of the most important tips to make the best use of a storage facility is to plan out the space. The first thing to do is to make certain that you place items that you are likely to need access to close to the front of the storage facility and to allow for walkways.
You should also compile an inventory of all of the possessions that you are placing into storage and keep it in either a safety deposit box or in a safe place in your home. Items being put into storage should be placed on pallets or on 2×4 boards in order to prevent dampness, as any concrete floor can end up becoming damp and cold.
You should never put into storage anything that could possibly be considered to be combustible. This includes such items as paint thinner, solvents, paint, gasoline, and so forth. Uniform size boxes should be used in order to make it easier to stack them in the storage facility. You should also make certain that the boxes you choose will be strong enough to be able to hold between 25 and 30 pounds; you should not put too much into any one box.
The contents of the box should be listed on all four sides and the boxes should also be sealed with tape and numbered. Lighter boxes can be stacked on top of heavier boxes, and large appliances make very good packaging cases for items such as blankets, tablecloths, clothes and towels.
