Putting a car into storage for a long period of time can be more complicated than it might initially appear; however, being aware of some of the things that can go wrong means that you will be able to cut down on these complexities and make the entire process a lot easier.
To prepare to put a car into storage for a long period of time, you need to first drain and flush the radiator and then refill it with new antifreeze. Check with the facility to ensure this is acceptable. Some kind of cover should be placed over the radiator overflow line, as this is one place that bugs would be only too happy to call home and could result in the line being plugged.
The engine oil and filter should be changed, and the grease fittings and the hinges on the doors, trunk and hood should be lubricated. The route that you decide upon is likely to be dependent on the length of time for which you are intending to put the car in storage.
The engine should be started and run until blue smoke comes from the exhaust. This coats the inside of the carb, cylinders, exhaust and manifold with a light covering of oil in order to prevent corrosion. The gas tank should be emptied as well.
