Saving money on a long-distance military move

Military men If you get issued with PCS orders then you may have to move quite some distance to your next posting. Obviously this is going to mean some expense; however, there are a few things you can do to keep your military house move costs as low as possible.

The first thing you need to do is to work out how much you are going to need to spend on your move and then make sure that everything you do is within this budget. You may be entitled to some reimbursements from the government, although it is unlikely that these will cover all your expenses. To find out whether you can get help with your long-distance military move, speak to your family center.

If you move things yourself then reimbursements may be based on how far you are moving and the amount of items you are moving. The more you are able to do yourself, the more money you are likely to save. This will help to keep moving costs down.

Remember to have a good clear-out of your belongings before you move. There is no point paying to ship items if they are going to be thrown away, given away or sold at the other end. Remember that donating items to charity may get you a deduction when you file your taxes.

If you can avoid making any additional payments because you have gone over a weight allowance, this will also help you to keep within your budget.
