Scared of Moving to College?

Scared of Moving to College?

Moving to college can be scary – especially if you are moving to a campus pretty far away from where you grew up. So, how do you deal with the fear of moving to college? Here are some tips to making the transition a little less terrifying.

Stay in Touch
One way to reduce the anxiety of moving to a new place is to stay in touch with friends and family you’ll be moving away from. How can you do this?

• Start a blog – A blog or a website is a great way for friends and family to stay in touch. Post photos, write about your experiences in your new town, and ask friends to comment on your posts. This is a great way to stay connected to your past while opening the door to your future.
• Talk to Mom and Dad – Before you move away, talk to Mom and Dad about the communication plan. Figure out the frequency for which you’ll call home and even visit. At first you might want to call home every night. Later on, you might only call once a week.
• Save that Address – Gather the contact information for your friends, family, colleagues, and even teachers. You never know whom you might want to reach or get in touch with. You might need a reference or just a friendly voice.

Take a Trip
Before you move, take some time to visit the campus. This way, you will have some time to orient yourself and figure out what you might need to take with you. Also, explore the city. Knowing where you are about to move to goes a long way in reducing the stress and anxiety.
