Those of you old enough may remember the fairytale spring wedding on Cape Cod in 1986 where an American princess of sorts married her own personal Conan the Barbarian. Yes, we’re talking about the marriage of Maria Shriver to actor and former governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Unfortunately, it looks like the couple have moved in separate directions.
Essentially, the couple may have been doomed from the start: She of the intensely liberal Kennedy clan and he an outspoken Republican from Austria. She was a rising television journalist; he was a muscle-clad star of B-movies and “Pumping Iron.” Despite the odds, the couple moved ahead, got married, and had a family. They eventually became the first family of California.
Earlier this week, Arnold and Maria announced their separation – and Maria has already moved out of their Brentwood estate. The split comes four months after Schwarzenegger ended his two-term run as the “Governator” and 25 years of marriage. The fact that he became governor may very well have been the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Though no word on whether divorce is on the cards, the couple has issued a statement requesting privacy and respect. They also let the world know that they will continue to parent their four children, ranging in age from 21 to 13, together. Well, whatever happens, we wish them both the best of luck as they move on to the next chapter in their lives.
