Storing items until you move

Storing items until you move

Moving your items into storage may occur for several reasons.  You may need to store your items for a few months until you find a new home.  For example, you may sell your home but not be able to find a new home to buy, or have three months until you will move to a new state and your new home.  Things such as this happen all the time.  This is why storage facilities exist.  Placing your items in storage can feel like a daunting task as you have a lot to consider.  It certainly is not easy to part with your precious items, even if it is only for a short time.  You also want to make certain your items will not be damaged while in storage.  There are five things you can do to eliminate issues with the move to storage.

Examine your options

The first thing you want to do is look at the various storage options you have.  Storage facilities are but one choice.  In fact you can rent a storage container and have it put in a storage yard until you want it moved.  A truck will pick it up when you are ready.  There are certain things you want from the storage site though.  You may want it to be climate controlled, with easy access, surveillance cameras and a safety lock that will be hard to breach.  Accessing the unit may be a choice of indoor or drive up access.  Perhaps a hands-off approach is what you’re looking for (full-service storage).  Choose what suits you.

Choose the proper size

The size of your storage unit needs to be large enough for all of your goods, but you do not want it to be so large that you are only using a third of the space you are paying for.

Get rid of your stuff

Do not keep things you know you never use or need anymore.  Keeping too much stuff means spending more on storage space and therefore you tend to waste money that could be used for your actual move.

Labels

Labeling should be your mantra.  It is very important to label everything in sight.  No matter what you are putting in the box, make certain you have a label or inventory for it.  This will help you find your items later when you are finally ready to unpack.  You may need to pull something from storage before taking everything out, so having labels is going to save you time and frustration.

Prepare your items

There are certain protocols to ensuring your items are safe.  Blankets, drapes and clothing need to be cleaned and wrapped appropriately before they are stuffed in a box.  Dishes and other items that can break should also be stored correctly.

Following these steps will make it easier for you to move when you are ready and to feel your goods are secure.  After all, they are the things that you desire to keep.
