Tips to manage a big move

Moving is a project that takes a good deal of work to plan out.  Most people do not seem to realize how many possessions they actually have until they move; in order to make the process efficient and orderly, it is a good idea to employ some quality tips in order to get the job done right.

One of the best tips is to work ahead and take the opportunity to purge.  You do not need to wait until you actually start packing, as pre-planning is vitally important to a successful move.  Make sure that you have the non-essentials all packed away several weeks before moving day, as in the process you are likely to find yourself confronted by items that you have not made use of for a number of years or which may not be appropriate for your new home, either for aesthetic or some other reasons. You need to plan ahead and divide up these unwanted items into different piles and boxes, and you should sell or donate these items before the move.  It is better to do this before the relocation as the last thing you will want to do is have to start getting rid of stuff in your new home, particularly if it is smaller than your present property and with all the other organization you will have to do.

Another good tip is to make sure you are organized when it comes to the issue of deconstructing furniture.  Bed frames will need to be disassembled and table legs removed, and all the loose hardware should be gathered into individual sealed baggies for relocation and organization.  Each of these baggies should be labeled so that you can easily find what you need when you have moved.  It is an excellent idea to label each and every component prior to taking it apart to ensure that you have a plan in place for putting it back together in the event that you no longer have the original assembly instructions.

One excellent piece of advice is to be resourceful and make use of recycled boxes.  Cardboard boxes can be found at many retail stores, as well as on Craigslist, and stores in the mall are a good place to check.  They frequently have such boxes as a result of large inventory deliveries; the boxes can then be recycled on to you.

In much the same vein, you can make use of the pillows and comforters from your own home as a method of cushioning fragile pieces of home decor rather than bubble wrap during relocation. It is a good idea to make use of the pages from magazines rather than newspapers to wrap around dinner glasses and plates due to how transferable the newsprint on newspapers can be.  Cushion your wares with the use of paper or Styrofoam plates, which also helps to prevent them from rattling against one another.
