The full cast of comic book movie Guardians of the Galaxy is slowly starting to come together, with the revelation that action star Vin Diesel (Fast and the Furious, Riddick) has been hired to play the role of Groot in the much-anticipated motion picture.
Guardians of the Galaxy sees Chris Pratt in the lead role of Peter Quil, the Star Lord; a human pilot who gets involved with a bunch of mismatched mercenaries and eventually makes a decision to become a team of intergalactic crime fighters. Other members of the cast include Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana (Avatar), Glenn Close, John C Reilly, and Benicio Del Toro. The movie also features former Doctor Who star Karen Gillan, who played the Doctor’s loyal companion Amy Pond – the villain of the piece – in a role that she famously shaved her head for.
Guardians of the Galaxy is expected to be released at cinemas in the United States in August. Vin Diesel will be playing Groot, a tree-like alien superhero, according to the director of the Marvel space saga, James Gunn, who made the announcement on his Facebook page.
“Yep, it is completely official,” Gunn wrote, as well as posting a photo of Diesel and a mask of the leafy character he will be playing. “AND he’s amazing. I never knew someone could say “I AM GROOT” so many different ways and with such feeling (and that sounds like I’m kidding but I’m not!).”
