The Best Military Moving Tips

When you are a military family, you have probably moved more than a few times. In fact, you are probably so used to the “get-up-and-go” that you could pack with your eyes closed. While you are no doubt a moving expert, you still probably learn things through each move. BMS Moving & Storage is proud to serve our military families with exceptional moving, packing, and storage services. Through the years of assisting service members with their move, we have picked up a few useful tips that we would love to share.

Anticipate a Wait

When you are in the military, you know that things are very hurry up and wait. You may hear that you are getting orders and be ready to plan your move and start packing. Getting your orders can take months and planning too early may leave you in a sea of boxes with no moving date. If you are looking for a way to start preparation, turn to organization and cleaning. That way, if you don’t end up getting orders for a while, your home is at least cleaned, organized, and ready for a quick move.

Create a Military Moving Binder

By establishing a particular spot to keep important documents, you don’t risk accidentally losing something you need in the chaos of the move. Place important documents like birth certificates, wedding licenses, moving contract agreements, and more in a binder complete with tabs. Keep the binder with you; don’t pack it in a box. No matter where you are in the course of your move, you can pull out the documents you need.

Photograph Your Belongings

Military moving goes smoothly most of the time, but occasionally things can get lost or damaged. Make sure to document your items using a camera phone, so you always have those pictures on hand. Moving apps are an excellent way to keep the photos organized, and it can even help you when you unpack!

Create a “First Day” Box

Create a special box complete with everything you need to live for the first day or two in your new home. Include a few plates, utensils, soap, or anything else that you think you will need right away. This box should be the last to go on the truck so you can pull it out first thing.
