How to Move a Home Office

How to Move a Home Office

Moving any office is difficult. However, when you work from home, you have unique challenges that you will face. You have both your home, and your business to move at the same time. This may sound almost impossible. Thankfully, there are simple solutions, tips, and advice to help your move go smoother. BMS Moving & Storage has decades of experience in helping clients move their home office. Our team is happy to share some of the tips we have learned over the years.

Clean the Clutter

Everyone’s office has some sort of old clutter of some type. No one wants to move things they don’t intend on ever using again. Go through your home office and clear out items that you no longer use or need. One area of the home office that tends to have lots of paper pileup is the filing cabinet. A lot of the files you have saved over the years are likely to no longer be relevant or necessary, or may even have been saved in digital format.  Making a move provides an excellent opportunity to clear up your home office; therefore, be sure to sort through and get rid of any items or files that you no longer have any need for.

Plan Ahead

The most stressful moving situations occur because the client didn’t prep and plan beforehand. It is important to make sure that you have plenty of time to pack up your home office prior to relocation. You should commence packing your home office a minimum of two weeks before the day of the move. This allows you time to create a moving timeline, check off tasks as you go along, and not feel like you are in a rush to get things done.

Label Every Box

Have you ever packed a few boxes and then completely forgot what was inside? Multiply this by one hundred and that could happen if you don’t think about labels at the start of your move. Boxes should be labeled so that you know precisely what is in each one.

Notify Clients

When you work from home, you may not have a lot of face-to-face time with clients. Remind clients a few weeks before your move that you may need a few days to get settled in your new location. Put an auto-reply message on your email informing clients of your move and let them know when you will be able to respond to emails.

Give Yourself Time

Make sure to give yourself enough time to get set up at your new home office. You may need a week or more to get Internet and phone service hooked up to your new place. If it is imperative to get Internet set up as soon as possible, call your company ahead of time to get an appointment as soon as it is available.
