Before Moving
Prior to moving, you may need to complete some tasks ahead of time. The first step is getting organized. If you are having the moving company pack your items, make sure to remove any necessary medical equipment, medication, or items that you need on a daily basis and place them aside somewhere safe. Try to clear out any belongings you no longer need to minimize the amount of packing. Remember to do the following ahead of your move:
- Refill all prescriptions
- Locate a hospital closest to your new home in case of emergency
- Check for changes in your disability benefits
- Ensure utilities are switched over
Notify Your Moving Company
Before moving, talk to your moving company about any medical equipment you will need to be transported. There are specific precautions or restrictions your moving company may have when transporting combustible equipment, like oxygen tanks. If you have medical equipment that is precisely calibrated, notify your movers and ask about their particular experience in moving fragile medical equipment. BMS Moving & Storage routinely moves medical and research equipment for private and public clients. We are happy to walk you through the process we take to ensure your devices arrive at your new home in flawless condition.
Check for Accessibility
When you and your family member arrive at your new home, you want to make sure it is properly accessible for them. You may have to do some work before your move in, installing ramps or handrails to prepare it for your family member’s arrival. If you are unable to travel to the new location before your move, talk to a few companies in the area that specialize in ADA construction. They may be able to prepare your home for you, so when you arrive, your family member will have no issue in getting around.
Minimize Stress
For many family members with a disability, moving can be even more stressful. Try and minimize stress by planning your move well ahead of time if you can. Take breaks during packing and when you arrive at your new city, plan a fun activity. Even if you are just relaxing at a local park, taking some time away from the chaos of moving can be incredibly beneficial for you and your family member.
