There’s nothing like living in the big city, and there’s nothing like living in the suburbs. They are essentially, opposites. Yet both of them offer a unique way of living that appeals to different people at different times in their life. While the city life is lively and exhilarating, it can simply be too busy for when you’re ready to enjoy a simpler style of life – and with that comes a relocation. However, just because you’re ready for a life in the suburbs doesn’t mean that the transition will be effortless and flawless. After all, you’re leaving behind all the lights, camera, and action for the quieter, more low-key lifestyle. It can take some time to get used to but with these tips, the transition will go smoothly.
Look for An Area to Live Based on The Community
Coming from the city, you know that different areas and neighborhoods offer unique characteristics. However, you’re used to sections being categorized by industry types, such as the entertainment district, or the art district. In the suburbs, things are sectioned off a little differently.
Instead of being categorized by the type of entertainment, the suburbs are separated by the type of living. This can be an excellent way to find an area within the suburbs that appeals to you and your soon-to-be new lifestyle. For example, there are neighborhoods that are dominated by college and university students, or communities with young families, old families, retirees, empty nesters, etc.
Look for a place to move within the suburbs per the type of communities, as opposed to the big city districts you’re used to. After all, the “entertainment” district in a suburb may consist of nothing more than a playground and a theatre. So, base your search on the type of people and lifestyles that appeal to you, and then find a home within that area.
Remember the Commute
A commute in the suburbs can be much quicker or much longer than what you experienced when living in the city. Either way, it will be different from what you’re used to. If your job is still in the city, you may have a longer commute in distance, but shorter in time since you won’t have the millions of people putting a halt to traffic each morning.
If your job is relocating with you, you may be able to sleep in longer as you no longer have to battle the traffic or have a long ride on public transportation.
If you don’t have a car and have always relied on public transportation as most people do in the big city, you may want to reconsider. The public transportation options tend to be more limited in the suburbs. Not only are they less frequent, but they don’t always go to where you need it to. This is something to consider and prepare for to ensure a smooth transition while relocating.
Whatever it is, the commute should be considered when relocating from a big city to the suburbs. It’ll be different from what you’re used to, and it could play a part in the final area you decide to call home.
Experience the Newness of The Suburbs
The best way to make the transition from the big city to the suburbs is to dive into the newness of it all. At first, you may experience a bit of culture shock. Everything from the way people interact with one another, levels of customer service, how people walk and talk and so much more will be different. Things tend to be slower in the suburbs which will likely be a huge difference for you coming from the big city. It may even be a tad bit annoying as you’re used to a very fast-paced lifestyle, but embrace the newness and you’ll transition smoothly.
Remember to take a moment to reflect on the ambiance of the differences. Focus on how nice it is to be in a more relaxed lifestyle as opposed to narrowing in on the “slowness” of it. Don’t be deterred by the limits of the suburbs or the changes in culture. Embrace it and find things that make you love it. And that is the key to relocating with ease.
