The actual birthday of former US president Abraham Lincoln is February 12th; however, America commemorates him, and the other past presidents, on Presidents’ Day on the third Monday in February. All Americans are aware of Abraham Lincoln, who was the country’s 16th president.
‘Honest Abe’, as he was affectionately referred to, was born on February 12th 1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky. He became president of the United States in 1861 and although he personally loathed war, he ended up being drawn into it due because he thought it was the only chance to save the country after the declaration of secession from the Union by the southern states. In addition to saving the Union and being president at the time of the Civil War, Lincoln also wrote the Emancipation Proclamation that ended slavery in the United States.
Lincoln also wrote and presented the Gettysburg Address, which was the memorial for the most important and bloodiest battle in the whole of the Civil War. This was the turning point of the entire conflict.
Not long after the end of the Civil War, Lincoln made history in a far sadder way by becoming the first US president to fall victim to assassination. He was shot and killed in Ford’s Theater by John Wilkes Booth on April 14th 1865, which was Good Friday. In some states Lincoln’s birthday remains a legal holiday, including Arizona, Connecticut, Missouri and New York.
