Admit You’re Happy Month

Admit You’re Happy Month

August is Admit You’re Happy Month. If you have not already done so, it is still not too late to come out and say: “I’m happy!”  In previous years more than a dozen state governors in the US have given proclamations in celebration of Admit You’re Happy Month, while urging their constituents to make the most of this fact and lighten up a bit.

Being happy and admitting it seems to be a difficult thing for a lot of people, in the United States in particular.  There are many reasons why this might be the case, although one of them may come down to the fact that the US was founded by the Puritans who, while certainly hardworking, were not exactly renowned for their great sense of humor.  Their legacy continues to this day with the oddest of phrases, ‘work ethic’, which bears their name, and is the reason that so many people seem to feel guilty if they are happy about their lives!

Some people are afraid to admit that they are happy for superstitious reasons, fearing that to do so is to tempt the universe to do something to them that will make them very, very unhappy.  Then there are the dour religious types for whom the existence of corruption and sin in the world precludes them ever feeling happy!

The truth is, of course, that happiness is very good for you, and there is no reason to feel bashful or guilty for being very happy with what you have.  Celebrate Admit You’re Happy Month with a smile!
