Before the move

If you start getting ready to move between six and ten weeks before the actual day, the important details can be taken care of early on.  Correct planning at this point will help to make the move as easy as possible.

The first thing you need to do is begin the search for a reliable and professional moving company to handle your relocation.  You should get written quotes from a minimum of three professional moving companies and check that they are fully insured and licensed.  Check references to determine the quality of the services that these companies provide, and never let a low quote be the deciding factor in which company to choose.

If you are making a move to a new city, it is a very good idea to visit prior to the actual relocation to check out your new home and find suitable schools for your children.  Travel arrangements can be made in advance; however, you should make certain that there is some flexibility in case anything changes at the last minute.  You should also make any necessary travel arrangements for your pets and your motor vehicle.

Make sure that you keep any valuables and important documents with you when you travel to your new destination.  Collecting all the receipts for expenses associated with the move is also a good idea for tax purposes, especially if you are relocating for work-related reasons.
