CBS announced yesterday that eight new series have been ordered for the fall season. Five of these eight shows will premiere in the fall, including a spin-off of the most popular show in TV, NCIS, which is based in New Orleans and features former Quantum Leap and Enterprise star Scott Bakula in the lead role.
CBS is ending the current season as the top network on American television, as it has for the last few years, but ratings were still down this season. CBS is taking no chances by focusing on familiar hits, with five of the six brand new drama series all being crime shows. The sole exception is Madam Secretary, which stars Tea Leoni as the US secretary of state. It is to air on Sunday nights along with The Good Wife, the network’s most critically acclaimed drama.
Meanwhile, Two and a Half Men, which first aired on CBS back in 2003, will have its final season. The series has survived despite losing lead actor Charlie Sheen and young Angus T Jones, both under highly controversial circumstances, and creator Chuck Lorre promises that the last season will be filled with surprises. Whether there is any chance of Sheen’s character being brought back from the dead for a guest appearance remains to be seen.
The Robin Williams comedy series The Crazy Ones has been canceled after just one season and there will no longer be four comedy series on CBS on a Monday night for the first time in 25 years.
