Downsizing or upsizing

Downsizing or upsizing

Moving from a flat to a big house or from a house to a small flat are two very different situations.  Making a move from a house to a flat will require some downsizing, and you may even find yourself needing to invest in monthly storage in order to have somewhere to keep your excess belongings.  On the other hand, moving from a flat to a much bigger house will see you with a lot more space that you will probably want to fill up with more belongings and furniture.

Relocation from a house to a flat is a great way to save money on your mortgage and to downsize.  You may also decide to make the move to the flat a temporary arrangement while you are waiting for a new home to be built or while you are saving money in order to purchase a new home.  Living in a smaller flat means that you will be able to save quite a lot of money when it comes to utility bills, as it is a lot less expensive to heat and cool a small flat than it is a big house.

If you decide to move to a flat and downsize, this can also be a great opportunity for you to get rid of any belongings or items of furniture that you no longer have any use for, or items of clothing that you don’t wear any more or which you can’t fit into.  Items that are broken and need to be repaired can also be dealt with at this point.

You might want to consider selling larger pieces of furniture to consignment shops in order to try to make a profit, or even donate them to charity.  If the downsize is intended to be a temporary arrangement, on the other hand, you might want to think about renting a storage facility in order to keep your excess possessions rather than just throwing them away.

When you downsize, money can be saved by renting out a smaller moving truck than would have been the case if you had kept all of the excess belongings and items of furniture that you have now managed to dispose of.

If you are moving from a small flat into a bigger house, on the other hand, you may wonder how you are going to fill up the extra rooms and space in your new home.  The key to this is to take the time to organize and fill each individual room in turn.  If you have been living in a flat, you are likely to have enough furniture and possessions already to fill a bathroom, bedroom, kitchen and living area.  If you still have empty rooms on your hands then you can either buy discounted furniture from a consignment shop in order to fill each room or just buy new furniture little by little so as not to blow your budget.
