Making a move to a smaller space can be an emotional and time-consuming experience. Everyone accumulates a lot of different items over the course of their life and it is helpful to have a strategy in place to assist with sorting them all out in order to make it easier to downsize.
You need to have a plan in place from the beginning, particularly when it comes to bigger items. Even if the new location you are to move to has not yet been completely finalized, you need to know how much space you are going to have to work with on an approximate level. You can then measure and see what will actually fit in such a space, including clothing, kitchen items, furniture, pictures and keepsakes.
You should decide which items you intend to take with you on the move, which you will not have room for but still wish to keep and thus may have to put into storage, which you can give away or sell, and which should simply be thrown out. Of the innumerable possessions that you will have accumulated over the course of your life you need to focus on those essential items that you genuinely need to keep.
Mark and sort the most important items first, throwing away the least important items as you go. Items you intend to store or give away should be set aside or even packed in the meantime. The rest of your possessions will seem less overwhelming to deal with once you have sorted out the really important ones.
