Educate Yourself as a Homeowner

Unfortunately, when you move into a house, there is not a homeowner’s guidebook.  So, when you get the keys to your new home, there are some things you should know.  The main thing is to remember that you need to have some pretty basic homeowner skills.

As a homeowner, you will eventually need to make some basic repairs.  Perhaps you will need to change a light fixture or install a window.  What happens when the toilet overflows?  These are all things that can be a problem, but you shouldn’t feel like you have to move out just because they happen.

Even if you choose to move your house, these are some handy skills to have!  Check out the top skills every homeowner should have, it’s never too late to re-educate yourself.

As a homeowner you should be able to:

  1. Fix the leaky faucets – Save yourself dollars by simply replacing a broken washer.
  2. Unclog the sink. – Knowing how to clear a stoppage can save you calling an expert.
  3. Hardwire a light fixture (this is good for installing ceiling fans as well!) – Knowing the difference between the colored wires is vital.
  4. Know which breaker to shut off and when. – Get to know your breaker box like the back f your hand.
  5. How to use a fire extinguisher – This is essential for the safety of your household and family.
  6. Save your wiring by stemming a flood – This could save you thousands in repair bills.
  7. Stop a toilet from overflowing. – This could save you spending hours waiting for a plumber.

We know it might take a little while to make these skills second nature, but it is possible.  Remember, practice makes perfect and the more you know how to fix in the house, the less money you’ll spend on professional assistance!
