Filming has started for the now-traditional Doctor Who Christmas special. The Christmas episode of the long-running science fiction series has become a jewel in the schedule of the BBC since the venerable franchise returned to television screens back in 2005 and this year’s episode will be the first to star the 12th Doctor, Peter Capaldi.
Last year’s special was The Time of the Doctor, which marked the exit of former lead Matt Smith and his regeneration into Capaldi. The episode pulled in ratings of over eight million, which peaked during the pivotal final scenes. Little is yet known about the 2014 Christmas special; however, filming has now started in earnest in Cardiff, with the show written by show runner and producer Steven Moffat and directed by Paul Wilmshurst (Da Vinci’s Demons).
The shoot for the Christmas special could take up to four weeks, according to a tweet made by Wilmshurst, and one of the biggest controversies of the special surrounds Jenna Louise Coleman, who plays the Doctor’s companion Clara.
Although there was some speculation about whether Capaldi would be a short-lived Doctor in the manner of Christopher Eccleston, who played the ninth Doctor for just one season in 2005, the Scottish actor has since been confirmed for Series 9 next year; however Coleman is another matter, with rumors flying that she will be leaving after less than two years. “The truth is … I don’t want to tell you the truth because I quite like these rumors,” she says.
