If you are the type of person who is trying to live a greener lifestyle, you are probably concerned about the carbon footprint left by your move. There are a lot of things you can do to attempt to minimize this impact during relocation, but the biggest responsibility is probably going to be on the moving company. So, you may want to make sure that the movers you choose do things with the environment in mind.
Remember, moving companies will be using the bulk of the gas and packing materials during the relocation. So, if you want to leave as small a carbon footprint as possible, there is some legwork you’ll need to do to find a green moving company. This all starts with asking plenty of questions.
What kind of packing materials will be used?
The packing materials used during relocation usually generate the most waste and disposing of these packing materials also takes a lot of energy. So, you’ll want to know what kind of moving and packing materials the company uses. Are they recycled or biodegradable? Is the material compostable? Do they reuse their packing peanuts or bubble wrap?
What about the truck?
A green moving company will definitely make an effort to offset the carbon emissions caused by their moving truck. Ask if the trucks run on biodiesel fuels or if they have any hybrid vehicles in their fleet. If they don’t, you may want to ask if you could have them use one larger truck than two smaller ones for your move. That will use less fuel in the long run.
As you research different moving companies, just let them know what your concerns are. Let them know you are interested in working with an eco-friendly moving company.
