Hiring a moving company

Hiring a moving company

It takes time to hire a professional moving company; therefore, you need to start looking for an affordable and reliable service provider well in advance of the actual move.  You need to hire a moving company that has a solid track record rather than making the decision solely based on a low estimate.  Using a quality professional moving company should make the whole relocation process considerably easier.

You should obtain at least three quotes from different moving companies and then take the time to check out their reputation and professional credentials.  You should find out their insurance and licensing details and see whether they possess a local address.  Ask for references and do not be afraid to telephone or even visit the office.

Information about interstate moving companies can be accessed by entering their names or their USDOT numbers on the website of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) via its company snapshot page.  If the estimate provided by the moving company seems too low to be realistic, you need to be very careful.  This is especially true if the company provides an estimate over the phone or internet and has not visited your home. The American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA) is the moving and storage industry trade association.  AMSA has a certification program called ProMover which helps to identify legitimate companies that have passed a background check and promise to uphold a code of ethics.

Never agree to a cash deposit prior to relocation, and work out if there may be hidden charges.  It is also a good idea to talk to your co-workers, friends and family members about their experiences with different moving companies before coming to your decision.
