How to downsize

Making a move to a smaller house later in life can be a very challenging experience.  Rather than purchasing something bigger in order to serve the needs of a growing family, older adults are generally more concerned with having less space so that they have fewer responsibilities connected with home maintenance.

For many, the selling of and move away from the family home can be the result of the death of a loved one, or an illness or a disability.  Other people may be relocating in order to gain a new lifestyle in their retirement or to be closer to family members.  Regardless of why the move is taking place, such a shift can be both a mentally and physically exhausting experience.

The great majority of people will have accumulated a great many possessions over the years, and will not be able to take everything with them upon their relocation to their new house.  As a result many personal items will need to be removed either by selling them or giving them away to friends or charities.  Fortunately, there are a few tips on how you can begin to do this.

One good tip is to start with the rooms in your house that you already make the least use of.  Start the sorting out process in these rooms and try to avoid cluttering up the rooms that you do use on a regular basis.  It is also a good idea to start the process with big items.  Identifying what you intend to do with the furniture before the smaller items will make you feel that you are making better progress.
