How to Move With Pets

Moving can be a traumatic and frustrating experience for people, but for pets it can be downright terrifying.  Pets have to cope with a great deal of unfamiliar movement, sometimes spending many hours in a motor vehicle, and then get used to a completely new environment.

This level of stress can actually cause poor health in a pet, which makes it very important that you do everything you can to ensure that the move is as smooth as possible for your furry friend.  One good tip is to take your pet to see a vet prior to relocation.  Make sure that your pet gets a full medical check-up and that any necessary shots are given.

Let your vet know about the impending move.  If you are moving long distance, see if they can recommend another vet.  Some sedatives for your pet might also be a good idea if the move is a long one; make sure that you discuss this with your vet beforehand.  It is also important to understand if a travel identification card is necessary when moving to a new state, as state laws may regulate the entrance of pets.  You should make absolutely sure that you are in possession of all the appropriate papers before you leave.

A pet carrier will be required to contain your pet during the move, or a portable kennel if your pet is a dog.  Be sure to properly manager the food and water intake before and during the journey.  You may not be able to frequently break during your journey.
