There’s no denying the fact that earthquakes can be scary – even if they are minor. When your house shakes and sways with the moving tectonic plates, your house could sustain structural damage. Your belongings could be ruined. So, what do you do?
The Stuff Inside
After an earthquake strikes, you really need to take a look around your house to determine what, if anything, has been damaged. Open your cabinets throughout the house – things likely have shifted and will need to be put back into place. Do this carefully; otherwise things could tumble out onto you!
Gas and Electric
Take a look at both gas and electrical lines. If you don’t know what you’re doing, get professional assistance. You need to make sure that nothing is leaking or malfunctioning. If that is the case, you could experience a fire or an explosion forcing you to move out of the house. Be careful! If you suspect there is a leak, call your energy supplier as well as the fire department right away.
The Foundation
Even if the earthquake was small, your home’s foundation could have still been damaged. Take a look to make sure no cracks have formed. Look around the base of your home as well as in the basement and on ceilings or walls. Structural damage could lead to collapse.

It doesn’t matter where you live; you need to be ready for an earthquake. Many people move away from places such as California to avoid the risk of an earthquake, but the fact is, an earthquake can happen anywhere in the world. Do some research online, or through the FEMA website, to help make sure you are ready.
