Joe Wright is to direct a brand new Peter Pan origin story. The Anna Karenina and Atonement helmsman has been signed up to direct the new big screen project from Warner Bros focusing on the fairytale hero, which is being referred to as an introductory movie along the lines of Batman Begins.
The script has been penned by Jason Fuchs and the film is to be produced by Greg Berlanti, whose previous credits include Dawson’s Creek; Fuchs is best known as the creator of current superhero TV hit Arrow. Warner Bros is reportedly “very high” on its current project, according to the Hollywood Reporter, and the new Peter Pan film is seen as being a major priority.
Warner Bros’ Peter Pan project is one of a number of similar projects that are currently in production, with the children’s book Peter and the Starcatchers being adapted by Disney with Gary Ross, the director of The Hunger Games, at the helm. Actor and producer Channing Tatum is also developing a project simply named Pan for Columbia Pictures alongside Joe Roth.
The character of Peter Pan, otherwise known as ‘the boy who never grew up’, was originally created by writer JM Barrie. The green-clad youngster has been depicted in movies many times, including the famous animated feature from Disney in 1953 and Hook, a loose sequel to the books directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Robin Williams and Julia Roberts, in 1991.
