Legendary Entertainment is in the process of developing a new film based upon Skull Island, better known to moviegoers as the home of King Kong. The movie is expected to be released on 4th November 2016, despite production not yet having started and no casting having been announced. The picture is not going to be a sequel or reboot of Peter Jackson’s 2005 Universal King Kong movie, although the big ape is expected to be included in some form.
The project was announced by Legendary over the weekend at Comic-Con, the same venue that the production company first announced the new Godzilla movie back in 2012. The island, the name of which comes from a rock formation that resembles a human skull, first appeared in the original King Kong movie back in 1933 and is home not just to Kong but also to a number of other prehistoric creatures and a primitive society of human beings.
Legendary says the new film will explore the island in a way that previous Kong-centric pictures have never done before and “take audiences deeper inside the rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions”. It is expected that Universal will distribute the picture as part of its relationship with Legendary.
Legendary has also announced that its Godzilla franchise is set to be joined by a range of new monsters, including Mothra, Ghidora and Rodan.
