Kingdom of Roosevelt, Eric Bechard’s wild game restaurant, is set to move from its current location at 2055 SE Cesar Chavez Avenue. The name of the restaurant is a reference to the terrain of the Roosevelt elk, which was local, and is focused on both wild game and ingredients that have been foraged locally. They are then served on the menu with names such as ‘wood pigeon liver custard with elderflower and pickled huckleberries’.
The cuisine is undoubtedly quite different from the mid-priced comfort fare of the Portland wheelhouse, however, and the restaurant has sometimes seemed to be struggling to fill its small dining room in its existing ‘off the beaten track’ location; the restaurant is sometimes half-empty even in the evening on a weekend, which is likely to be the reason for the relocation.
Bechard, formerly the chef at Thistle Restaurant in McMinnville in Oregon and Alberta Street Oyster Bar, has said that the move will be taking place but that there will be no additional comments made about the development; the deal is still pending at this time, with no timeframe established. Assuming that the deal goes through, Gina Helvie is expected to take over the current space.
Helvie is a friend of Bechard who works at the Kingdom of Roosevelt. Together with Andrew Hanson and Robert Thomas of Swift Lounge, she intends to open Trinket – a lunch and breakfast nook that they say will be “more accessible than what’s happening now – something cool for people in the neighborhood.”
