Downtown Worcester is heading south of the border, in a manner of speaking. The Mezcal Tequila Cantina is making a move from its current location at 166 Shrewsbury Street into the street level space situated at the bottom of Major Taylor Boulevard Garage – the former home of Sh-Booms – with the expectation that it will open in 2014.
The news of the impending relocation was revealed via a press release issued by city manager Mike O’Brien, who said that the restaurant move will offer a one-of-a-kind culinary experience that caters to its already devoted current clientele as well as visitors to the DCU Convention Center and arena and to local office workers. The restaurant will be filling the 11,466-square-foot space that has been standing vacant since the closure of Sh-Booms.
Niche Operations Inc will be managing Mezcal as it seeks to undertake a significant expansion of its city footprint, according to O’Brien. The firm also aims to manage a brand new restaurant at the Shrewsbury Street site. As well as Mezcal, Niche Operations Inc is in charge of the management of Bocado Tapas Wine Bar in addition to the food and drink establishments located at One Exchange Place. “Managing these multiple concepts in the City of Worcester, over a significant number of years, has given Niche Operations Inc a strong track record and a unique marketing edge that promises ongoing success,” O’Brien claims, adding that the relocation of the restaurant will bring vitality and vibrancy to the DCU Convention Center in particular and to the downtown dining scene in general.
