Military moving tips

The Defense Personal Property Program is a brand new program from the Department of Defense that has been created in order to increase the quality of life for service members, as well as for civilian employees and their families, via an improvement in the moving of household goods.

The program offers empowered and direct communication between service members and the Transportation Service Provider and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, from any location that has access to the internet.  In the event that you do not have access to the internet, once the initial requirements of the move have been completed then you can gain access to the shipment information during your move to your new home via an interactive voice response system.

You will need to establish a DPS account in order to be able to both process and manage your shipment, as well to file a claim, request delivery, and complete a customer satisfaction survey.  It should be noted, however, that not every personal property shipment might be eligible for relocation within the new system; to check if you qualify, you will need to contact your local Transportation office.

All personnel who decide to move during the summer season need to be aware that there is a very high volume of moves in June, July and August, which are the peak moving months of the year.  When selecting a pickup date, it is therefore advisable to be willing to be flexible.
