It doesn’t matter what time of the year it is, moving can be a real pain. But, in the winter, we need to take extra care. Moving during the cold weather will take some extra planning on your part, but it doesn’t have to be hard. Keep these tips in mind should you need to relocate in the winter.
Check the Heating Systems
One of the first things to check when you move during cold weather is the furnace in your new home. No one wants to move in and have to call the repairman right away. You’ll also want to make sure that the heater in your car is working properly and that means the entire heating system – hoses, battery, fuses, belts, and so forth. No one wants to wait for a tow truck in the snow.
Staying Warm
In addition to checking the heating systems in the house and vehicle, you’ll need access to plenty of warm clothing when you move in the winter. Pack your warm clothing and blankets where you can easily access them – and never pack them all in the moving truck! Consider keeping some warm clothes, as well as your pet bedding, with you at all times.
Protect the Plants
Wrap your plants in plastic to keep them warm. Small grocery bags are great for smaller houseplants while larger trash bags are ideal for the bigger guys. Just make sure to leave the bags open at the top so the plants can breathe.
Dealing with Liquids
In the winter, liquid can freeze so take care when placing liquids in the moving truck for relocation. This means put any batteries, medication, baby food and formula, and anything else that might freeze or be damaged by the cold inside your car or the cabin of the moving truck.
