We can’t all have the benefit of living in areas where the temperatures are warm all year round. Some of us have to face the wetter and colder winter months, which is fine, but if you want to move at this time of the year there are a number of factors that you need to take into consideration at the planning stage.
The wintry weather conditions can be difficult for larger vehicles – snow and ice can be real hazards for moving trucks. This is something you should discuss with your moving company, because if there is a particularly heavy snowfall the day before your move it could cause a problem. If you are moving in the Winter just have patience as delays can happen and the safety of life and property are paramount.
On the flip side you may be able to save a little money, as fewer people tend to move at this time of the year and there may be a deals to be had. Moving companies do about half of the entire year’s business between Memorial Day and Labor Day (the Summer).
One of the main things you can do is to be prepared for any eventuality. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and stay in constant touch with your professional movers to make sure that everything can go ahead as planned. If there is poor weather on the day of the move but your movers are confident that you can go ahead, make sure that the driveway and path are clear of snow and ice by shoveling it away and then salting the area.
If you plan to pack your items yourself, one suggestion for a winter move is to rent or buy plastic cartons rather than using cardboard boxes for your move, as plastic will survive getting wet. Many professional movers offer plastic crate rentals.
