Hollywood actress Ellen Page, most famous for her title role in the movie Juno, has revealed that she is gay. The 26-year-old actress gave an emotional speech at a Las Vegas conference on Friday aimed at GLBTQ youth, which ended with her publicly acknowledging her own sexuality for the first time.
“I’m here today because I am gay,” the actress confessed to a surprised but quickly enthusiastic and supportive crowd. “And because … maybe I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility. I also do it selfishly, because I am tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission.”
Page went on to say that she had suffered for many years by being too afraid to speak out and that her relationships and her own mental health were adversely affected as a result of this secrecy. Page added that she hoped her own admission would help other young people who struggle with their sexuality and that there are too many who suffer rejection and bullying and end up dropping out, becoming homeless and even taking their own lives as a consequence.
Page was thrust into the spotlight seven years ago, back in 2007, with the success of Juno, in which she played a teenage girl who fell pregnant to her high school boyfriend. She will next be seen alongside Hugh Jackman in X-Men: Days of Future Past, which is expected to be released in May.
