How to Prepare a Dishwasher for Long-Term Storage

How to Prepare a Dishwasher for Long-Term Storage

Many homeowners are investing in super high-quality kitchen appliances. Due to the large sums of money they spend on these units, they tend to bring them along during a move. If you find yourself wanting to store your dishwasher for the long-term, you need to ensure that it is properly prepared. BMS Moving & Storage has extensive experience in prepping any kitchen appliance for long-term storage. Here are a few tips we have learned along the way to keep your dishwasher in pristine condition.

Thoroughly Clean Your Dishwasher

The first step in preparing your dishwasher for long-term storage is to give it a thorough cleaning. Thankfully, the dishwasher can do a lot of the cleaning itself. Fill both of the detergent cups with baking soda and set the machine going on a regular wash cycle. You can also put a cup of bleach in the water at the bottom of the tub once the dishwasher has filled with water for a powerful clean. Let the machine run until it reaches the end of the cycle.

Clean the Filter & Drain

Remove the filter that is located at the bottom of the machine’s tub and use water and detergent to give it a thorough clean. Find the water shut off valve to stop the supply of water to the machine. After you have stopped the source of water, you can drain it. Use the drain cycle twice to make sure that there is no water left in the machine.

Clean the Nooks and Crannies

Create a paste using baking soda and water and locate an old toothbrush. Use this mixture and the toothbrush to clean the area around the door’s gasket. Get into any tight spaces and eliminate any food debris or mildew that has accumulated in your machine.

Air Dry Your Dishwasher

Leave the dishwasher’s door open for a few days. Any remaining water should evaporate and completely dry your dishwasher. Disconnect the machine and make sure that all the hoses are properly drained. If not, empty the hoses and let them air dry for another few hours. After all components of the unit are completely dry, coil the hose up and place it in the dishwasher for transportation.

Choose the Right Mover

Dishwashers are notoriously fragile. One wrong move and you will be purchasing a new one. It is important that you talk to your mover about their experience in moving and storing large items like dishwashers before signing your contract. BMS Moving & Storage can assist you in preparing items prior to storage and moving them to and from our secure storage facilities. We are happy to provide you with any information you need to make storing your items a breeze.
