If you are taking an air conditioning unit with you when you move, it is important to make sure that it is prepared and packed properly.
The first stage is to clean the unit, which will help to ensure that it is in good working order when you get to your new home and help to prevent any problems if you are storing it for a little while. There are several steps you should follow to complete the task.
The first step is to make sure that the unit is not connected to the power source. If the unit is wired in directly then it may not be worth disconnecting it to take with you; however, if you do want to take it with you then it is important to make sure that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions for switching the unit off and disconnecting it. An essential part of the process is to discharge the capacitor, making sure that there is no electrical charge left in the unit when you start cleaning.
The outside cover should be cleaned and all you need to do this is a wet cloth. It is essential to remove as much dust and dirt as you can. The front cover can then be removed, which is easier on some units than on others. Make sure that you keep any screws that you take out somewhere safe and you can then clean the filter. A reusable filter can be washed with warm soapy water and you should make sure that it is completely dry before you put it back in the unit. Use a vacuum cleaner to deal with the inside of the air conditioning unit to get rid of any dust. Once everything is dry and clean, the unit can be put back together and you can reconnect it to the power to make sure that it is still working.
Next you can pack the unit ready for the house move. Make sure that the unit is unplugged and cooled before you begin the packing process. Lift the unit out of its position and close any side panels.
Use tape to secure the power cord to the side of the unit. You need to make sure that this is not taped to the back of the unit, as this is where the coils are. It is a good idea to use the original box for packing the unit; however, if this is not available, a strong appliance box can do just as well. Use packing paper as padding and avoid the use of polystyrene beads, as these could get stuck inside the unit and cause problems when you try to use it again.
Tape the box securely and make sure it is labeled so that your moving company knows to take care when loading the unit onto the truck. When you arrive at the other end all you have to do is unpack the unit, plug it in, and you are ready to go.
