The first thing to do before moving your books into long-term storage facilities is to examine the books and make sure that there is no sign of damp or dirt. Putting books into storage while they are less than pristine can do a lot of harm to the paper; therefore, any books that are damp or smell a little musty should be air-dried before they are packed away by leaving them out in a well-ventilated room.
A conservator can treat books that are already damp and have developed mold, which is an investment worth making if your books are valuable and you do not want to lose them. If mold is allowed to set in, this can cause considerable damage. If you do not want to go down this road, pack moldy books separately.
If your books have been untouched for a while before you prepare them to go to your moving company storage facilities, you should also check them for signs of any insect infestation. Look for unhatched eggs and remove them using a soft brush.
Finally, leather-bound books should be wrapped using archival paper or brown kraft paper to prevent them sticking together.
