Sort out your finances before you move

Moving FinancesWhether you are upgrading to a new home or making a move into your very first apartment, the process of relocation can be both stressful and exciting.  There are a number of things that need to be done in order to ensure a successful move, including coordinating the relocation and packing up all your belongings, and it is also important to ensure that you have sorted out your finances.

One good tip is to get to know your new neighborhood ahead of the actual relocation and find the location of your nearest ATM and bank branch.  This means that in the event of needing extra cash during the move, you will be aware of where to go to get it.  If the bank you use does not have a branch in your new local area, it might be an idea to change to another bank that has a local branch.

It is also important to make sure that you have updated your contact information with your bank, your utility companies, your employer, your credit card company and any government agencies that are going to need your new address and phone number and your updated bank account numbers.

You can update your contact information in person, by mail, by phone or via the Internet.  You should also review the first bank statement you receive after the move has been completed to make sure that your direct deposits and automatic payments are being processed correctly.
